Formula
mi = km × 0.621371, and back the other way km = mi × 1.6093.
Running distances in miles
Most people converting kilometers are runners. A 5K is 3.11 miles, a 10K is 6.21 miles, a half marathon of 21.0975 km is 13.11 miles, and a full marathon of 42.195 km is 26.22 miles, which is where the familiar 26.2 comes from. A 15K is 9.32 miles and a 50K ultra is 31.07 miles.
Doing it in your head
Multiply by 0.6 and add a little: 50 km is 30 plus a bit, and the exact answer is 31.07 miles. For rougher numbers, 8 km is almost exactly 5 miles, so halve the kilometers and add a quarter of that.
There is also a neat trick with Fibonacci numbers, where each number is the sum of the two before it (3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34). Consecutive ones convert into each other: 5 miles is about 8 km, 8 miles is about 13 km, 13 miles is about 21 km. It works because the ratio between them approaches 1.618, and a mile is 1.609 kilometers.
Speeds and road signs
The same factor converts speeds, since km/h and mph are just kilometers and miles per hour: 100 km/h is 62 mph, 80 km/h is 50 mph, and 120 km/h is 75 mph. That is worth knowing when driving a rented car abroad, because the speedometer may show only one of them.
Where the number comes from
Since an international agreement in 1959, a mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 meters. Divide one kilometer by that and you get 0.621371 miles, which is the factor used on this page. It is not rounded for convenience; the conversion is exact to the digits shown.
