About the gif tools
GIF has no video compression. Each frame is a picture of at most 256 colors, stored more or less in full, which is why five seconds of screen recording can weigh ten megabytes while the same clip as an MP4 is a few hundred kilobytes. The tools here fight that the way gifsicle does: one shared palette, and only the rectangle that changed stored per frame.
So make GIFs deliberately. Keep them short, keep the width at or below 480 pixels, and drop to twelve frames a second for screen captures. When the target accepts video, GIF to MP4 usually cuts the size by a factor of five with better quality. When it does not, which still covers plenty of chat apps, forums, and email, compress and resize instead. The encoder is gifkit, written in Rust for this site.
