Converting does not recover detail the JPG already lost, but it gives you a lossless file that will not degrade further with each edit.
About the formats: JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format built for photographs. It compresses aggressively, produces small files, and opens on every device ever made, but it cannot store transparency and each re-save costs a little quality. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format with full transparency support. It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, icons, and anything with sharp edges or text, but it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP for photographs.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
