PNG screenshots and exports often weigh several megabytes. JPG shrinks photos and screenshots dramatically for upload forms with size limits, email attachments, and web pages. Transparent areas are filled with white, because JPG has no transparency.

It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, icons, and anything with sharp edges or text, but it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP for photographs. JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format built for photographs. It compresses aggressively, produces small files, and opens on every device ever made, but it cannot store transparency and each re-save costs a little quality.

What happens to transparency?

When should I not convert PNG to JPG?
Screenshots of text, logos, and line art look worse as JPG at the same size. For those, PNG or WebP keeps the edges crisp.
