About this tool

Copying text out of a PDF page by page is tedious and often produces broken lines. This tool extracts the whole document in one go, keeps the reading order and paragraph breaks as well as the PDF allows, and gives you the text on screen to copy plus a .txt file to download.

It works on PDFs that contain real text, which is most documents produced by software. Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages; for those, convert the pages to images and use Image to Text, which recognises the letters optically.

Everything happens inside your browser. Your file is never uploaded to a server: the conversion runs on your own device using WebAssembly, and the result is downloaded straight from memory. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

How to use it

  1. Drop your PDF files into the box above, or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Click the button and wait a moment.
  3. Download the results individually or all at once as a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I get no text?

The PDF is a scan or was made from images. Use PDF to PNG followed by Image to Text (OCR).

Is formatting kept?

Plain text only: paragraphs and line breaks, no fonts, tables, or images.

Can I convert PDF to Word?

Not here; that needs layout reconstruction. Extracting the text and pasting it into Word is the practical route for most documents.

Is this really free?

Yes. The site is supported by ads, and there are no limits on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter runs entirely in your browser. Files stay on your device, which also makes it faster than upload-based converters for anything larger than a few megabytes.

Is there a file size limit?

The only limit is your device's memory. Images and audio of any normal size are fine; for video, files under about 500 MB work well on most laptops and phones.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. Very old browsers without WebAssembly support will not work.
