ICO files hold several sizes of an icon, and most editors and websites cannot open them. This converter extracts the largest, sharpest image inside and saves it as a lossless PNG with transparency intact, ready for editing or for use anywhere a normal image is expected.
About the formats: ICO is the Windows icon container: one file holding the same picture at several sizes (16, 32, 48, 256 pixels and so on) so the system can pick the right one. It is still what browsers look for as favicon.ico and what Windows uses for program and folder icons. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless image format with full transparency support. It is the standard choice for screenshots, logos, icons, and anything with sharp edges or text, but it produces much larger files than JPG or WebP for photographs.

Frequently asked questions
Which size is extracted from the ICO?
The largest image in the file, which is normally the 256 pixel version. Use the resize tools afterwards if you need a specific smaller size.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Transparent icon backgrounds stay transparent in the PNG.
Is this really free?
Yes. The site is supported by ads, and there are no limits on how many files you convert.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser. Files stay on your device, which also makes it faster than upload-based converters for anything larger than a few megabytes.
Is there a file size limit?
The only limit is your device's memory. Images and audio of any normal size are fine; for video, files under about 500 MB work well on most laptops and phones.
Which browsers are supported?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. Very old browsers without WebAssembly support will not work.
