About this tool
Type the bill, pick a percentage, and the tip, total, and per-person share appear instantly. The table underneath shows 10% to 25% side by side, so a group can settle on a number without anyone doing arithmetic on a phone under the table. Rounding up gives whole-dollar shares that are easier to hand over in cash.
In the US, 15% is the floor for table service, 18 to 20% is standard, and 20% or more is generous or for a large group. Counter service and delivery run lower, and many places already add a service charge for groups, so check the bill before adding more.
How to use it
- Enter the bill total (before or after tax, as you prefer to tip).
- Set the tip percentage and how many people are splitting.
- Read the tip, the total, and the share per person; the table shows other percentages at a glance.
Questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is accepted; tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the traditional rule, and tipping on the total is simpler and a little more generous. Enter whichever amount you want to tip on.
How do I tip quickly without a calculator?
Move the decimal point one place left for 10%, double it for 20%, and add half of the 10% figure for 15%.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser; nothing is stored or transmitted. Refresh the page and it starts clean.
Is it free, are files uploaded, which browsers work: the general questions are answered once for the whole site.
