About this tool

Type a caption for the top, the bottom, or both, and it is drawn onto every frame of the GIF in the classic bold, outlined meme lettering. Long captions wrap automatically, the text scales with the width of the GIF, and the result keeps the original timing, looping, and transparency.

The GIF is re-encoded with a shared 256-color palette and the same frame optimization as our GIF compressor, so adding text usually does not make the file larger. For the best-looking result on a small GIF, pick the Medium or Large size; on wide GIFs, Small keeps the caption from covering the action.

Everything happens inside your browser. Your file is never uploaded to a server: the conversion runs on your own device using WebAssembly, and the result is downloaded straight from memory. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.

How to use it

  1. Drop your GIF file into the box above, or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Adjust the options if you want; the defaults suit most files.
  3. Click the button and wait a moment.
  4. Download the result.

Frequently asked questions

Which font is used?

Impact, the standard meme font, when your device has it (Windows and macOS do). Otherwise the closest bold sans-serif installed on your device is used.

Can I add a caption to a GIF from Giphy or Tenor?

Paste a direct link to the GIF file in the link box above the options. Giphy page links are converted automatically; for other sites, save the GIF first and drop it in.

Can I place the text somewhere else or use several lines?

Top and bottom positions are supported, and each caption wraps onto multiple lines by itself. Free positioning is planned.

Does it work on transparent GIFs?

Yes. Transparency is preserved and the text is drawn on top of it.

Is this really free?

Yes. The site is supported by ads, and there are no limits on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter runs entirely in your browser. Files stay on your device, which also makes it faster than upload-based converters for anything larger than a few megabytes.

Is there a file size limit?

The only limit is your device's memory. Images and audio of any normal size are fine; for video, files under about 500 MB work well on most laptops and phones.

Which browsers are supported?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop and mobile. Very old browsers without WebAssembly support will not work.
